2018 has seen some of the most successful movies releases yet. From the iconic Avenger’s: Infinity War, to the groundbreaking Solo: A Star Wars Movie and the fun Mamma Mia 2: Here We Go Again. As well as the revivals of childhood favorites Christopher Robin and Incredibles 2, this year’s been filled with blockbusters on the silver screen. With 2018 coming to a close, we’re only getting ready to see some of the best fun family movies that Hollywood has to offer.
Here are some of the fun family movies you should definitely watch out for this year:
A tale of an epic journey, Smallfoot follows adorable yeti Migo who discovers something they all thought didn’t exist: humans. When he is shunned by his village for this, he sets out to prove that humans are real. This fun family movie is not only entertaining but also makes a relevant social commentary. It’ll widen your world view and might even spark a healthy discussion at the dinner table.
Johnny English Strikes Again
While 2018 has seen some of the most awaited returns, Johnny English stands out most. With the last movie debuting over a decade ago, the beloved “world’s greatest spy” makes an exciting comeback to the silver screen. This makes for a great nostalgia-filled movie experience for you and an awesome introduction to all-around funny guy Rowan Atkinson for your kids. We surely can’t wait to see what other hilarious antics this British spy has in store for us.
The Nutcracker and the Four Realms
No one loves getting into the Christmas vibe early more than us. This classic holiday film with a new spin will definitely get us there. Even though it’s not explicitly a Christmas tale this time around, it’s still a welcome addition to our list of fun family movies. The Nutcracker and the Four Realms follows the journey of Princess Clara as she tries to conquer against the fear and destruction brought about by the fourth realm before it’s too late.
There’s nothing like The Grinch to make us reminisce about childhood Christmases. This timeless tale by our favorite Dr. Seuss gets a beautiful remake. However, as the trailer suggests, we may see a different side of The Grinch in this revival. In any case, catch this heartwarming film with the kids to start a new tradition.
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
After we all saw the story of The Boy Who Lived unfold throughout our childhood, we get a new saga from the magic world. Dated decades before Harry Potter, the Fantastic Beasts series tells the story of some of our favorite characters while also introducing us to new ones. In the first installation, we were introduced to Newt Scamander, a young wizard who studies Fantastic Beasts in the hope of their understanding and societal acceptance. In this second movie, we finally get to look into the notorious crimes of the infamous Grindelwald.
Ralph Breaks the Internet
In 2012, Wreck-It Ralph gave us a load of nostalgia with a movie filled with an old school arcade that brought together some of our favorite video game personas. We also got introduced to gentle giant Ralph and quirky Vanellope who made an unlikely duo. This year, we’re set for more adventures and even more exciting crossovers as the team gets uploaded on the Internet. A movie with 90’s characters as well as Disney Princess, Storm Troopers, and hilarious Internet references all rolled into one? Sign us up!
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse
Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse is a comic book coming to life. Marvel’s given us an array of fun family movies but this movie makes a statement. The friendly neighborhood Spider-Man we all know and love gets an unexpected protégé, Miles Morales. Unexpectedly, he discovers the different Spider-verses where every other kinds of Spider-man lives. We can’t wait to catch this epic colliding of universes this December.
Mary Poppins Returns
Nothing like the timeless film that probably started our love for fun family movies. In Mary Poppins Returns, we see now-grown Michael and Jane Banks living their adult lives. Quite like another movie with a loveable bear released this year, this film hints at the rediscovery of child-like sensibilities at the face of tremendous—and adult—troubles. Remaining a fantasy-musical movie, Mary Poppins along with Jack are sure to sing us through the holiday season with smiles and whimsy.
